Nvidia-Backed Poolside to Build $16B Gas-Powered AI Data Campus in Texas
Poolside, with backing from Nvidia, is set to construct a $16 billion AI data campus in Texas, leveraging the state's abundant natural gas resources. The Horizon project will occupy over 500 acres in the Permian Basin, the nation's most active natural gas hub, and will generate its own electricity independently of the Texas grid.
The site, part of the Mitchell family's Longfellow Ranch, includes an existing gas plant built by Occidental Petroleum, along with pipelines and fiber networks for efficient data transfer. Eiso Kant, Poolside's co-founder, emphasized the strategic advantage of on-site infrastructure, calling it "the real physical bottleneck in our industry." The campus aims to deliver two gigawatts of compute power—equivalent to the Hoover Dam's output—phased to prevent system overloads.
